Stairwells and Culture

Well here’s another cultural challenge; it seems like the startup company Zenefits is having trouble keeping sex and alcohol out of its stairwells.

This is made even funnier by the fact that Zenefits is in the industry of HR systems management.  I suppose that this isn’t the type of Human Resources/Relations that they were considering (yes, I am giggling).

Now to the point:

Culture isn’t built by letting people do whatever they want.  Sure there is a need to trust your employees but strong, effective culture is built from a level of discipline.  When a company communicates its mission, its values, and reinforces those values through action then you have the makings of something solid.

Otherwise you just have a schoolyard where the kids believe it is perpetual recess.

For many startups companies, not just Zenefits, it’s time to grow up.
